Nunawading Cricket Club – Junior Weekly Update

Hi everyone

Well, even though the weather again had an impact on our Super 7s last Saturday morning, the rest of our games occurred without a hitch. It was a great night on Friday, with all of our younger Juniors taking over Mahoneys Reserve. The U12 and Fast 9 match on Bob Saker oval was fantastic. Equally as good were the numbers of excited children in our Junior Blasters and Super 7s. I also popped into Mahoneys Reserve on Sunday morning, and saw the Girls team and Fast 9s play. Again, it was just fantastic to see not only the enjoyment and parent involvement – but also the development of the children in terms of their cricket!

I would also like to reiterate what I said last Friday night in the club rooms. Many thanks to so many people (who I wont name – as ill leave some out accidentally), who helped make the night fantastic. Those families who assisted with food, coaching, or just generally helping out. It is what makes our club what it is. I was in fact at another local ground early on Friday with the U16s, (where there were also two matches being played, and a (much smaller) Junior Blasters program. I think it’s fair to assay what we have at Nunawading is unique!! The atmosphere an community we create is fantastic – and all that occurs because of you and your family!

Tomorrow, we will have Piccolino Pizza and sausages – so please come upstairs and grab a bite to eat, cold drink and listen to how our children performed in what should be a great night!!

Tomorrow Night at Mahoneys Reserve
A few important things to be mindful of at Mahoneys Reserve up until the end of the season:

Ground works have commenced on oval 2. Whilst I am sure the Local Council will leave the area safe, please pay extra attention to your children. Ground surfaces in some areas are uneven, with a lot of temporary fencing. Obviously all cricket activities will be away from these areas, however please just be mindful.

For our U12s who play the next two Fridays on the bottom oval – it is still possible to walk down the normal track – however you do have to go ‘in and around’ the temporary fencing, ‘in and through the nets’!!

Finally, we are expecting Council Parking inspectors to be at the grounds over the next couple of weeks. Please ensure you park correctly in marked bays, and not in no standing or other areas, without appropriate permits. It is likely the soccer club will be there at some stage as well, so please be mindful that even if parking is a premium, it will be better to park further away and walk – than park incorrectly and get a ticket.

Cricket
On the field, our ‘competitive teams’ (the older juniors who have ladders), are approaching the end of their season!

· U18s are undefeated, and on top of the ladder. They will no doubt have a home semi final.
· U16s have had an up and down season, however had a fantastic win last week.
· U14s are currently in fourth after a fantastic win last week – and are in a solid position to make finals.
· U12s are a very young team – however have developed incredibly well this season!! Most of these players have 1-2 more seasons in U12, so their future looks bright!!
· Girls team kicked off their ‘summer season’ last weekend – and have a great 4-5 weeks in front of them – to see if they can go better than the third placed finish they had in the ‘spring‘ season.

Junior Presentation Night
A reminder (and invitation attached), our Junior Presentation Night will be on Friday 15 March. This will again be a great way to celebrate the season. Exact timings of age groups are still being finalised – as we are trying to ensure we can have as many people in our rooms for dinner. I would expect we will have as we have done in previous seasons the youngest age groups first – with presentations starting around 5.45pm/6.00pm – and dinner a little bit later.

Trivia Night
There is still room available for the Clubs Trivia Night on 2 March. Again, this is always a fantastic night (and the prizes that have come in, look amazing)!! On that note, if you are also in a position to donate a prize of any type, please let me know!

Junior Structure
Finally you would have seen Dave Cowell’s (Club President) email, during the week regarding the Junior structure for 2019/2020. This structure will help ensure the Junior program improves even further. I cannot emphasise enough, that if you have the slightest interest in helping out, that you please contact Dave or myself for a chat. I can guarantee, that even if you have never been involved before, you will not be left on your own – or thrown into the deep end. The structure is set up in a way, where the load is shared. If you see yourself and your family at Nunawading in the coming 1-2 years, please let us know if you are interested!!

Nunawading CC, Junior Structure and Committee for Season 2018-19

Hi Everyone,

There are some important changes looming at our club and I would like to please ask for a few moments of your time to read and consider if you are able to help in any way.

Our Junior Manager, Rob Nash, is stepping away from his role (but by no means from the club) after 6 years of fine service. The Committee has determined a revised structure to take the Junior Club forward which splits the heavy workload Rob carries now into several roles, making roles easier to fill and less time consuming.

I have attached a slide pack that provides an overview of how we see the Junior Club being managed into the future. May I please ask that you read it and think about whether you can help in any way. The key roles to fill are:

  • Junior Manager
  • Junior Registrar
  • Social Co-Ordinator
  • Under 14-18 Co-Ordinator
  • Girls Cricket Co-Ordinator
  • Team Coaches and Team Managers

This might sound like a lot but our goal is to (continue to?) run the best junior program in the competition so we are aiming high to get good people to help us in these roles.

If you are interested in any of these roles, can you please contact me and we can discuss further. Any discussion is by no means binding so please give me a call if you would like to chat about any of this.

We have a great club, let’s all do our bit to make it greater.

Yours in Cricket,

Dave

Nunawading Cricket Club – Junior Weekly Update

Hi everyone – Even though the weather has been a bit all over the place in the last 24 hours, conditions forecast for Friday and the weekend, look great for cricket!!

On Friday night, we will have Super Burgers and sausages. I have asked our Junior Blaster families to lead the preparation and cooking of food – and also ask our Super 7 families to jump in and assist please. I will provide your Coaches/Team Managers with exact details of what is required. We again have a similar scenario to last week, with U12 and U18 teams having byes – and U14 and U16 playing away (very unusual scenarios). Even if you have never been involved with cooking the food on a Friday – please put you hand up to assist. Many hands make light work. With younger children, there is no expectation to have to stay back late – but we really need you to cook the food please for your own families – and the teams coming back home after playing away!! Many thanks in advance. I know a few did assist last week – so again, many thanks for that assistance – as it was a great night.

We will be having our U12s and Fast 9s (who are not generally at Mahoney’s on a Friday evening) – playing a match together on Bob Saker oval tomorrow. Collectively, these four age groups (Junior Blasters, 7s, 9s and U12s) are the future of Nunawading, so this really will be a great spectacle, to see our youngest Juniors taking over Mahoney’s Reserve.

On Sunday, our Girls team will be playing on Bob Saker oval, with our Fast 9s on oval 3. This is another great opportunity to come and watch Nuna in action. I encourage families to come and support our teams over the weekend.

Also, over the coming weeks – I will also advise when our 7s are playing at home on a Saturday/Sunday. I strongly encourage our older Junior Blaster families – who are considering taking the next step with their cricket – to bring their children to watch some of a Super 7 match – so that they can start obtaining an understanding of what to expect next season.

Junior Presentation
Your invitation to the Junior Presentation is attached. Friday 15 March will be a great night to celebrate the season. Over the coming weeks, I will advise exact times that each teams presentations will occur.

Trivia Night
Our Trivia Night is also fast approaching (Saturday 2 March). Again, more information attached – however this is always a great night, that many junior families enjoy. Please don’t feel like you did need a big table. Even if there are just 1-3 of your ‘group’ interested, we make it work – and ensure a great night!

Coach the Coaches
Last Friday was a great success with our Coach the Coaches course. Many thanks to Club Coach Rob Ferdinands and Leigh Callander for running what was a great night. Feedback has been positive, and I know the group of 10+ had a great night.

Nunawading Cricket Club – Junior Weekly Update

Hi everyone

Well cricket is back this week!! Tomorrow night in our Club Rooms, we will be having Super Burgers and sausages. With our U12 and U18 teams having byes for the next two weeks, and our U14 and U16 teams playing away, it will still be great to have those families come to our rooms afterwards. Please come upstairs, and enjoy hearing how our Juniors are going.

Tomorrow night, we will be having our two Super 7 teams play some match simulation as part of their training. Our U18 team are encouraged to come and assist with the organizing of the match (I know Kev will be there) – especially as our Super 7 coaches will be taking part in the ‘Coach the Coaches’ session (see below)!!

‘Coach the Coaches’ – Coaching Course
As I mentioned last week, with the unusual situation of not having any matches at home for the next two Fridays, we are taking the opportunity to do a few different things. It has been a great response by coaches/parents to attend the ‘Coach the Coach’s session’ – being run by Club Coach Rob Ferdinands. Last week I advised the course would start at 6.00pm, however we are looking to make this a 5.30pm start – which will finish around 8.00pm. If you are still interested in attending, please let me know.

I will be sending an email out to all those who have advised they are attending later this morning. If you do not receive this from me, please let me know (as I may have inadvertently left you off my list)!

Representative Cricket
Last week when I mentioned Representative Cricket, I omitted Harini Piduguralla. Harini, who plays in our Girls Team, played in the under 14 Youth Premier League. The team went on and won the Grand Final. Congratulations Harini !!

Also since last week, Jim Jessup and Max Waburton, played in the Grand Final of the U15 Shield team for Box Hill. Whilst the team were eventual Runners Up (a great achievement), both Max and Jim had strong impacts on the match.

Finally for this week, Eloise Wood (who is a young U12), represented BHRDCA in U12 Girls Rep team. Her team also made the Grand Final – where Eloise took three wickets! This is an amazing effort – Well done Eloise.

Congratulations to all representative cricketers

Trivia Night
The Clubs annual Trivia Night is on Saturday 2 March (Flyer attached). As many would know, this is always a fun event – that many Junior families go to. Please refer to flyer attached with more information. Please don’t feel like you need to get a full table to attend – even a small group will work well!!

Melbourne Stars – Product Recall
The Melbourne Stars have late yesterday announced a Product recall. They have advised the following, and asked clubs to pass on:

‘We have been made aware that Melbourne Stars promotional LED wristbands containing button batteries contain small parts that could cause severe risk of injury if ingested by small children. We recommend any Stars fans who collected the wristbands to immediately and safely dispose of these wristbands by wrapping in paper and disposing in household rubbish’.

Junior Presentation – Nunawading Cricket Club
Our Junior Presentation evening, will be on Friday 15 March. Please lock this date in your calendars – more details in coming weeks.

Nunawading Cricket Club – Holiday Update

Hi everyone

I hope everyone is/has enjoyed their Christmas/New Year/Holiday break. As we all start to see the ‘Back to School’ sales (sorry Juniors – however the time is close), our attention turns to cricket starting next week. Some of our older Juniors have already started training – and we have also had a number of Nunawading Junior Cricketers playing representative cricket in December/January – which is fantastic.

Coaching Course
At Nunawading, we are very fortunate to have two ‘Level Three’ accredited coaches (Level Three, can only be obtained via nomination/invitation from Cricket Australia). Our coaches – namely Club Coach Rob Ferdinands and also Leigh Callander – both work with the seniors, and have had great success working with some of our Juniors as well.

On Friday 1 February (6.00pm – 8.00pm), Rob and Leigh will be holding a two hour coaching course (Coach the Coaches) for Nunawading Coaches/parents. This will be a great opportunity to hear from Rob and Leigh, who will not only talk about coaching styles and methods, they will also introduce some drills which you can use. At Nunawading (like all clubs) – our success is built on parents helping out, and this includes coaching teams. If you are interested in understanding coaching a bit more – then this is a great opportunity. Please let me know if you are interested, as we are keen to have a good number of Mums and Dads attend.

Community Involvement
As always, Nunawading is always looking to promote Community Involvement, and work with other Community Groups. The Lions Club of Forest Hill – who do amazing work – are in need of some new Members, so that this work can be continued. I am sure we have all heard of the Lions Club – however if you are interested to learn a little bit more about what they do, and what is involved, please refer to the attached brochure. There is no harm in making a phone call – one which may just ensure the work of Forest Hill branch continues.

Representative Cricket
As I mentioned in December, a number of our cricketers played various forms of representative cricket over summer. These included:

U18 – Joshua Richardson (BHRDCA)
U18 – Cameron Clark (BHRDCA)
U18 – Rohan Roy (BHRDCA)
U16 – Daniel Castelow (RCA)
U15 – James Jessup (Box Hill Shield)
U15 – Max Warburton (Box Hill Shield)
U14 – Kaelan Scully (BHRDCA)
U12 – Vaishnavi Munukutla (Victorian Team)
U12 – Eloise Wood (BHRDCA)

If I have left anyone off, please let me know, so we can celebrate this achievement (Clubs do not get notified directly of players who are selected).

It also gives me great pleasure to announce that the U18 BHRDCA team (which included Joshua, Rohan and Cameron) and the U14 Team (which included Kaelan) both won their tournaments. Congratulations to all on this great achievement.

I will have more details and photos on this in the coming weeks.

Nunawading Cricketers at the MCG
As also mentioned in December, we have two opportunities for our cricketers to ‘play on the MCG’. On the Second day of the Boxing Day Test Match, a number of our Junior Blasters played at lunch time.

This Sunday, our two Junior Premiership Teams from last season (U12 and Girls Stage 2 team), will be ‘Walking with the Stars’ prior to the Melbourne Stars v Brisbane Heat game. If you are at the ground, please keep an eye out for them and their Premiership pennants. Thanks to Jean-Paul Lefebure for organising.

Cricket Resumption
· Wednesday 30 January – Commencement of the Girls competition.
· Friday 1 February – Resumption of matches (U12, U14, U16, U18) and Junior Blasters.
· Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 February – Super 7s and Fast 9s will resume.

Coaches/Team Managers will advise all players directly when training resumes.

BBL Memberships
I still have a number of Membership packs, which I will distribute to coaches in the coming weeks.

Additionally, for those who took up my offer of some free tix to the BBL, as mentioned, I only had a few, and they were quickly exhausted.

Nunawading Cricket Club – Junior Christmas/New Year Update

Hi everyone

I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and on behalf of Nunawading Cricket Club, I wish you all a safe and happy 2019.

It was great to see so many people at our Junior Christmas Party – despite the rain. It certainly has been a season of ups and downs weather wise (one like we have not had in a while). Either way though, it is fantastic to see how our junior players are developing and enjoying their cricket.

Big Bash League Memberships
As mentioned previously, all Juniors (excluding Junior Blasters), receive a two game membership to either the Melbourne Stars or Melbourne Renegades. These memberships had been delayed, however I did receive all Memberships over the last weekend (they were all delivered to me).

I have handed a number off to families over the last few days, however if you would like to utilise your child’s membership sooner rather than later, please let contact me – and we can arrange a pick up/collection time.

Alternatively, all Juniors should have received an ‘e ticket’ – via one of your registered email addresses, which can be downloaded and printed. This will work the same way as the membership card, and admit your child to two matches. This email was sent on Wednesday 19 December (directly from the either the Stars or Renegades). If you are not sure which of your email addresses that was sent to, again, please let me know.

Finally – I do have a small number of Adult passes and additional childrens passes to Melbourne Stars/Melbourne Renegades matches. If you would like these, please let me know (first in best dressed). Please only ask if you are definitely planning on attending.

Nunawading Cricket Club Junior Blasters at the MCG
Despite the hot weather, Australia’s struggles with the ball and a pitch that resembled concrete, some of our Junior Basters, entertained the crowd at the MCG yesterday during lunch time. I am sure the crowd were more excited to see Nunawading Crickets out there, than the cricket they were watching………..

This was a great opportunity – many thanks to Daniel (Smudge) and Claire for organising.

Cricket Resumption

Friday 1 February will see the resumption of matches and Junior Blasters. Super 7s and Fast 9s will resume on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 February.

The Girls competition is also expected around this time. (Again, any girls interested in playing a 5-6 week season, please let me know).

Coaches/Team Managers will advise all players directly when training resumes.

NUnawading Cricket Club – Update for Christmas Party Tonight

Hi everyone

A reminder that tonight is our Christmas Party. Regardless of weather, we will be proceeding with pizza, sausages, cold drinks and special presentations. Please everyone, come upstairs to our Club Rooms, and enjoy what will be a great night.

For our Junior Blasters, Super 7s and Fast 9s – remember to bring a present for your child. Santa will be appearing at 6.30pm – 7.00pm.

U18, U12, Super 7s and Junior Blaster Families – as per messages during the week from your Team Managers, for our Christmas Party, we do not put one team on kitchen duty – instead we ask all families from all home teams to do a 30 minute shift of cooking, preparing or serving. I attach the roster as it stands – there are still a few vacant spots. Please let me know if you can assist. Many thanks to those who are listed on the roster, who have advised they can assist.

Team Photos
Jean-Paul Lefebure has also advised that Team Photos will be ready for collection tonight – so please see him to collect them.

If you haven’t ordered, you still can – they look fantastic!!!
