What an exciting finale to the home and away season of Nunawading Pirates cricket and great to see so many numbers back at the club for our free end of season BBQ. Thanks again to Luisa Mackie for her excellent organisation and Simon “The Tongmeister” Keele for his BBQ excellence. Thanks to all contributors over the course of the season we could not host these events without you all. A huge thanks also to Patty Mitchell for manning the bar all season. If you have a post game thirst Patty is the man to see for a quick cure.
The under 14s were unfortunately washed out in the deluge of Saturday. Jack got a start with the bat before shooting off to basketball and Cam barely got to face a ball before Mother Nature intervened and the heavens opened. We look forward to a Friday night under 14s in our own right next season.
At the resumption after the end of season break the Under 12s were on 9 points on the ladder, 9 points adrift of fourth placed Blackburn On Friday they competed for the final place in the finals and after setting Blackburn 174 started well by dismissing their best batsmen with a great run out by Robbie before he had faced a ball for a “Diamond Duck”. The fielding on display was nothing short of sensational with Zach’s great caught and bowled and Jack taking diving catches and running out batsmen from deep in the field. Ben Mason got among the wickets and Patrick West demolished the batsman’s stumps just in time for his grandfather to see it. The teamwork and camaraderie among this group is great to see. Their effort in making the finals fills me with pride and the work Paul, Derek and Pennie does with these guys is fantastic. Paul also seems to transport half the kids to and from the game (including my own boy) and is a great man to have around the club from both his organisational skills, commitment to the job and playing the grumpy old bugger role when we need him to. Sue Daniels is the teams scoring expert and a critical component of this group.
Ankylbyters – Buccaneers & Blackbeards
The intra club game turned out to be a high quality affair among our two Ankylbyter team both with a fierce desire to win. The running between the wickets of the Buccaneers was first class, in fact the best I have seen over the last few years at this level. Their backing up was great and Ben was a delight to watch with his stroke making. Reuben faced Suds and Westy and handled them brilliantly and Kyle stood out in only his second game. The Maharaj boys got to bat together and put on a great partnership reminiscent of Viv Richards and Clive Lloyd in their heyday. With cricket being the big winner on the night the official result of this match is a draw under the Duckworth Lewis system.
From a personal point of view it was great to spend some time with the Buccaneers and witness how far these kids have come and how well coached and supported the team is. Rob’s work with these guys is first rate and the results are there for all to see. Rob brings a real and obvious passion and dedication to the job and is a critical component of our coaching group and future plans. Great work mate and thanks.
A massive thanks also to Daniel for his outstanding work with the Blackbeards over the season. Dan is a great teacher of cricket and a huge asset to our club. I have been working with Daniel for two years now and cannot think of a better bloke to hand over our Milo program too. Such is Dan’s commitment to the club he is also helping with coaching of Under 12s as we enter finals.
To Claire and Nicole – your efforts as team managers have been simply fantastic. Your organisation of teams, kids and parents is first class and we could not have fielded the teams without you. You are both a huge part of our club and your efforts are very gratefully appreciated.
Claire also runs our boot camps which is a great way to break up training for the kids and was Claire’s idea for the beginning (although I am happy to take the credit).
A big thanks to Marty Hodgkins for helping out numerous times with the Blackbeards with umpiring and filling the breach umpiring and coaching this week when Daniel went over to Milo. Marty enters finals this week with our One Day team too. Good luck Marty.
Milo was officially handed over to Daniel who will take on the Coordinators role next season. These kids will continue their cricket development and we look forward to seeing some of the kids join the ranks of the Ankylbyters next season. A huge thanks to Dave Cowell and Glen “Max” Mackie for their brilliant work with the Milo In2Cricket program over the years.
We now have some great photos on the club website. Get on and check them out.

Our 2nd XI has qualified for the finals so look out for details of how we can support them when I advise of the venue for the Under 12s final.
Our One Day team also plays a semi final against top team Blackburn North at Koonung Reserve starting 1.00pm Saturday. If you can get along, even only briefly please do your best. There’s a few junior dads in this team too.
Finally – a big thanks to you all for your support over the year. I’ve said it before but we are a small club but what we do, we do better than any other club I’ve seen. We cannot do this without you and your kids. Thanks for choosing Nunawading as your club and we hope to make it bigger and better in years to come.
Look out for details of next season’s Registration Day and please do your best to have the kids bring along a friend. The incentive is first season – free membership and half price membership refund should your friend referral play the season.
I will be sending out a questionnaire in the next month or so for completion. If you have any ideas on how we can grow or do things better please put them in the suggestion section. With your help we can do things even better.
