Well what another exciting week in junior cricket with some excellent on field performances across all age groups, Milo in full swing and thebig Asian Noodle Night this Friday.
The Under 14s had a solid week with the bat despite the best attempts of the weather to intervene. Ash and Jack still putting in solid performances and looking to cash in with the ball in week 2 of their game against Heatherdale. We can’t wait to have these guys back full time with Nunawading next season.
The under 12s have been training hard and Derek, Paul and Pennie (no not a 1960’s musical trio) are seeing some excellent results. This week saw the lads rack up over 200 runs from their 44 overs with contributions from just about everyone. Combine this with the fact that Jack is having his rostered game off and you can see what a team achievement this is and testament to the development of these boys. The younger brigade of Abe, Josh, Aiden and Zach are really gelling with the veterans Riley, Michael, Cam, Robbie and Patrick. Lucas is getting better each week and Ben is a stalwart at the club now. The boys will be looking to defend this in the field and I’m confident they will chalk up consecutive wins.
Ankylbyters – Buccaneers
You all would have seen Rob’s follow up to the weekly update last week in which he was very thankful for the support of Claire, Paul and Wayne. The fact that we have so many great parents who help out at training and games then stay around for the Friday night BBQs and even play in the odd 20/20 intra club game is indicative of what a tight knit club we are. The results are evident with the continued development of the kids on the field. Rob assures me that the results are not just indicative of this but of the genuine enjoyment of the game from the kids. You are all well aware of my fun first focus and this is great to hear. Keep it up lads and let’s make the most of the rest of the season.
Ankylbyters – Blackbeards
This week the Blackbeards (and the club) welcomed two new players to the team. Dane and Jamison Travers debuted against Elgar Park last Friday and were presented their caps by coach Daniel in front of the team and all the parents. Both boys did really well with the bat and then in the field with Jamison even having a crack at wicket keeping in his first game. We also welcome Dane and Jamison’s mum Hilary to the club and I look forward to introducing you all to her in the coming weeks. A big special mention to Matty Cowell for his great work with the bat and courage on the field. Not much gets past Matthew and in his efforts to save runs for his team he hurt himself in a desperate dive for a catch. It nearly stuck and if it had it would have been the greatest catch in the history of Ankylbyters cricket. He did stop the boundary . Also great leadership from Michael Cowell. A good day from the Cowell boys all round.
Milo in2cricket is going strong and we welcomed a new family this week and it was great to see Paul upstairs afterwards. These kids are the next wave of players through the club with some already having siblings in other grades of cricket. Let’s make sure we give them plenty of support. Daniel will be working with the Milo kids over the next few weeks with the view of taking over the program next season.
Training This Week
This week’s training will be another Claire Maharaj special BOOT CAMP. Neither Daniel nor I will be in attendance this week so if you can help out Claire, Rob and Pennie it would be greatly appreciated.
If you have taken any photos of junior club action please e-mail them to Dave Cowell at dgcowell and he will load them on the junior club web site.
You may notice that the expiry date on our achievement awards is 31 December 2011. I am in contact with Jan from marketing at McDonalds to get some updated ones so if your child receives an award hang onto it and I’ll swap it over for a current one when the new ones arrive.
Club Shirts & Caps
I still have plenty of club shirts in sizes 9, 10, 14 & 16 so if you need a new one or want to get the jump on a bigger size for next season whilst they’re reduced in price please see me. Reduced price is $15.00 per shirt or $25.00 for two. Caps are free with registration or to new players however replacement caps are $5.00 each. Please see me if you need a replacement.
Jayden “Westy” West and Tom “Suds” Wharton reach the milestone of 50 Ankylbyters games this week. We will recognise this after the game during our Asian Noodle Night celebration so please make sure you stick around for this. This is a fantastic achievement.

Asian Noodle Night
Our Asian Noodle Night will be held at the club after play and Milo this Friday 17 February. We have two teams at home and one team just down the road at Kalang Park (Laburnum). Please notify myself and Luisa Mackie if you are able to provide a delicious Asian dish for the evening. Please let us know ASAP via e-mail as we have not had many volunteers as yet and we’d hate you all to leave hungry.
We will also require assistance with serving and cleaning up so please help your club. This is the last of our themed nights for the season so let’s make it a great one and as usual, your assistance is required and as always, appreciated.
Coaching tip of the week – Fielding keeps you in the game at all times. Make sure you concentrate on every ball when fielding, walking in with the bowler and always encouraging. Make sure you back up any wayward returns to the bowler or keeper and don’t forget our number one rule when fielding. DO NOT LET THE BALL GET BEHIND YOU.
Parents tip of the week – Please ensure your child wears jockey underwear as opposed to boxer shorts in order to retain the protector (box).
How can you help the club? Recruit potential players for next season. Remember to always look for prospective players should your children’s’ friends be looking for a new sport to play and recommend our club to them and their parents. Bring them down for a sneak peek this season.
There is a chance that some of our senior teams will play finals so stay tuned for details on how the juniors can play a part at these games. Our 5th XI contains several dads of current juniors such as Nigel Maharaj (Oliver & Kieran), Captain, Simon Keele (Jacob), Marty Hodgkins (Ethan) and yours truly.
David Cowell Snr is strutting his stuff in the thirds whilst Derek Clark (Cam) took 5 wickets on Saturday with the 3rd XI. Glenn “Max” Mackie (Ryan and Luke) has been getting around in both the 2nds and 3rds. Paddy Mitchell is clubbing runs left right and centre in the 4ths and his boy Jacob is a third generation Nunawading player behind grandfather Dave and dad Paddy.
The West Boys Patrick and Jayden are sons of club legend Mal – retired – but continually harangued to return to the field. Maybe next season Westy or at least when Patrick makes his senior club debut.
The season is nearing and end and we ask you to consider yours and your child’s intentions for next season. Being such a small club player retention is critical which is why recruitment of new players is essential to our club. Next season, with returning players and Milo graduations should see us with the following.
- 1 x Friday Night Under 14 B
- 1 x Friday Night Under 12 B
- 2 x Ankylbyters
With a few more players coming to the club we may also be able to field an Under 12 C (non-competitive) Friday night team.
