Well we’re back in the swing of things now with a few training sessions and a couple of weeks of hard, competitive cricket under our belts and the Asian Noodle Night just around the corner.
The under 14s are still going strong under the guidance of coach “Muppet” and Rob Robinson at East Burwood. We’re down to just Ash Bawa and Jack Peters as the only two Nuna boys but these lads represent our club with pride and passion. Having said that it is our expectation to be able to field an Under 14s side in our own right next season (on a Friday night) so it will be great to have Ash back in the fold Jack continues on his way and 14s will not be new to him next season.
I was fortunate to spend some time with the lads on Friday and Pennie and Jack have the boys playing great cricket. Line and length bowling and batting in partnerships have been the season focus for this team and a total of 124 was going to be hard for Park Orchards to chase. Jack has brought a few things back from the rep team which he implemented last week and the kids gelled really well. A big thanks to Paul Aspin and Riley Jones who came along for week 2 when Riley was rostered off. Sue Daniels continues her hard work as scorer but I’m sure would love a spell so she can sit back and watch Jack. If you know how to score and would like to give Sue a game off let Paul Aspin know.
Ankylbyters – Buccaneers
I cannot speak highly enough of the job Rob has done with these kids not just game days but at training as well. Rob has a real passion for the boys and his work with them is evidenced by the results they are posting and the development they are showing. Reuben, Matthew, Jacob, Ben and Josh just to name a few are really showing improvement and development whilst enjoying the game which is the most important thing. Rob has some great help from Claire and other parents which is why this team is firing on all cylinders. Keep up the great work guys.
Ankylbyters – Blackbeards
Another big week from these kids who just keep posting numbers week in, week out. Finn is setting the world on fire and Suds racked up his 4th 20+ score of the season. Jayden’s bowling is top notch, Ryan and Jacob work hard. Ethan is following in his dad’s footsteps with accurate bowling and the Cowell boys are another chip off the old block with Michael and Matty putting in hard each week. Noah and Hudson are best mates who thrive on playing together and are future leaders of the team. Daniel and Nicole have got that team working well together.
Milo is back and the kids had some nice shade to work in. These kids are the next wave of players through the club with some already having siblings in other grades of cricket. Let’s make sure we give them plenty of support. Daniel will be working with the Milo kids over the next few weeks with the view of taking over the program next season.
If you have taken any photos of junior club action please e-mail them to Dave Cowell at firstname.lastname@example.org and he will load them on the junior club web site.

Post Game BBQs
Remember even if you are playing away we’d love to see you back at the club for the achievement certificate presentations. This week the cricket (Australia v Sri Lanka from Perth) will be on the TV. We’d love to see as many back at the club as possible for a meal and a few
drinks at our very affordable bar prices. Friday nights is a great event at the club and also helps subsidise our low registration and apparel costs. Please support when you can.
Coaching tip of the week – Always watch the ball when batting. Start watching it whilst it is in the bowlers hand, as he comes in to bowl and continue to track it until it meets your bat with your head over it.
Parents tip of the week – Please ensure your child wears a predominantly white shirt for cricket training and has a hat sunscreen.
How can you help the club? Whenever you are doing some grocery shopping if you could just add box of icy poles or icicles for after training or games on a Friday.
Asian Noodle Night
Our Asian Noodle Night will be held at the club after play and Milo on Friday 17 February. We have two teams at home and one team just down the road at Kalang Park (Laburnum). Please notify myself and Luisa Mackie if you are able to provide a delicious Asian dish for the evening.
We will also require assistance with serving and cleaning up so please help your club. This is the last of our themed nights for the season so let’s make it a great one and as usual, your assistance is required and as always, appreciated.
50 Game Players
Next Week (Friday 17 February) sees two of our Ankylbyters play their 50th games. This is a great achievement and there will be recognition of this after the game. Jayden West and Tom “Suds” Wharton play their 50th games of Ankylbyters both starting when they were 6 with players who would now be in Under 14s. This is a great achievement and I look forward to the club recognising this on the night.
Thanks to all junior parents who attended the recent Sportsman’s Night at the club. We had a junior table which lacked one Director of Coaching who was having a lovely dinner when some time after 9.00 pm (after a nagging thought in the back of his head all evening) realised he had completely forgotten to attend (despite paying). Special Guests David Schwarz and Rodney Hogg provided great entertainment over the night and a great time was had by all. The next senior club event is the Trivia Night so stay tuned for further details.
There is a chance that some of our senior teams will play finals so stay tuned for details on how the juniors can play a part at these games.
