Firstly what a fantastic evening last Friday was for our first Curry Night. The club was pumping with kids and adults having a great post game dinner of either curry (with rice, yoghurt and papadums) as well as sausages for those kids not game enough to try some curry. A huge thanks to Nicole & Matt Browell, Luisa Mackie, Simon Keele Maria Wharton, Sue Daniels, Russell Peters and Suzanne Yasmin as well as seniors player Chirag “Chewie” Joshi for his last minute butter chicken curry sauce.
The evening was a huge success with the Bastianpillai family winning the raffle prize of the Dench’s meat tray. Happy BBQing Roy.
This week’s training will be Boot Camp to be conducted by Claire Maharaj who has been doing this for a while now. Also Nigel Maharaj made is seniors debut in the one day team last Saturday. Thanks Nigel.
Michael Wharton also rated a mention in the Club Log for his substitute fielding effort in the 4th XI a couple of weeks ago. At only 11 years of age nothing got past Michael in the field that shouldn’t have, he nearly pulled off a blinder of a catch and his strong throwing arm and enthusiasm won the praise of captain and club president Greg Clarke as well as the opposition. Well done Michael.
With all coaches now in place we are in the enviable position of being able to work one on one through myself with any escalated coaching needs. I have already done some work with individual bowling techniques and will work on that for the next couple of weeks with kids identified by match day coaches as requiring either assistance or further development.
When this is done I will then move on to batting techniques.
Under 14s parents please feel free to contact me about arranging time at Nunawading to work through any of these issues.
These kids are doing really well in the combined team with East Burwood. Jack Peters is opening the batting, Ken Xie is having a swing whenever he can and Ash Bawa’s development as a swing bowler and middle order batsman is progressing. Corey de Zoysa has also played in this age group. Congratulations also to Corey for making his debut with the senior club a few weeks ago.
The under 12s are continuing to improve under the guidance of Pennie Harrison, Derek Clark and the expert team management of Paul Aspin. They have gone up a grade and have several bottom age players yet are bowling and fielding well and batting out their overs. Congratulations to the leadership group of vice captains: Riley Jones, Cameron Clark and Michael Wharton and captain Jack Peters. Jack has also just attended his first BHRDCA U12 representative squad training session. Good luck Jack and keep up the hard work. Michael, Patrick and Riley are set to chalk up their five seasons of Pirates cricket after this season. Excellent going guys.
Ankylbyters – Buccaneers
Rob and Claire have this team running like clock work. Rob has been working on the basics with the kids keeping our main focal points of fun and participation in the foreground. I have witnessed these lads improve significantly and their enjoyment of the game has been evident. The work Rob is putting in outside of normal cricket times is significant and greatly appreciated by the club. Rob has also arranged a game for this week when a bye was scheduled giving the lads another week of cricket as well as another home game meaning consecutive weeks of two home games plus Milo in2cricket. Keep up the great work guys.
Ankylbyters – Blackbeards
Nicole Browell has taken on the full time team management role as Simon Keele and a few others will need to assist more on match days with Daniel’s dual involvement in both Ankylbyters and Milo in2cricket. Nicole has already organised the team roster for the remainder of the season and also played a huge role in curry night. Meanwhile, Daniel continues his nurturing ways with the kids and the results are evident. Daniel has also played the last two games with the senior club’s one day side under the captaincy of Simon Keele. Well done Daniel. The boys continue to develop their skills and work on the fundamentals. Both Jayden and Suds are in their 4th seasons on this version of cricket and are set to rack up 50 games of Ankylbyters after the Christmas break. Outstanding effort boys.
How great it was to see the future of the junior program strutting their stuff on Bob Saker Oval whilst the Under 12s were going through their paces. There was a sea of yellow visible from way across the other side of the oval all going through the foundation basics of the great game of cricket and having a ball at the same time. Dave and Maxie looked like they were getting plenty of help too but remember if you can help feel free to do so as both Dave and Glenn have boys playing other grades of cricket as well. Daniel will also be assisting with Milo in2cricket with a view of taking the program over next season. Daniel’s coaching style is greatly suited to the young kids and we are thrilled he has agreed to take this on.
If you have taken any photos of junior club action please e-mail them to Dave Cowell at email@example.com and he will load them on the junior club web site.

Coaching tip of the week – Remember whenever you are padding up to bat or wicket keep the FIRST item of protective equipment to go on is the box (protector).
Parents tip of the week – Please clearly mark your child’s equipment and bag with their name.
How can you help the club? Whenever you are doing some grocery shopping if you could just add a large bottle of cordial (home brand will suffice) and place it in the pantry in the kitchen of the club rooms. It’s only a couple of dollars and helps both the junior and senior clubs.
